Alstroemeria, also known as Peruvian lily or lily of the Incas, is one of the most popular and versatile cut flowers in the world. With its exotic and colorful blooms, long vase life, and wide availability, alstroemeria is a great choice for any occasion. Whether you want to express friendship, love, admiration, or gratitude, alstroemeria has a flower for you.
How to Care for Alstroemeria as Cut Flowers
Alstroemeria cut flowers can last up to two weeks in a vase, if you follow these simple steps:
* Choose fresh and healthy alstroemeria stems, with one or two open flowers and other buds showing color. Avoid stems with yellowing leaves, wilted flowers, or transparent petals.
* Remove any foliage that will be below the water line of the vase, as well as most of the foliage below the blossoms. This will prevent bacterial growth.
* Cut the stems at an angle, about an inch from the bottom, using sharp clean scissors.
* Place the stems in a vase filled with lukewarm water and a packet of commercial floral preservative. The preservative will provide the necessary nutrients, pH balance, and biocide to keep the flowers fresh and healthy.
* Display the vase in a cool and bright spot, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. Avoid placing the vase near fruits, vegetables, or other flowers that produce ethylene gas, which can cause premature aging and wilting of alstroemeria flowers.
* Change the water and recut the stems every few days, or whenever the water becomes cloudy or discolored. This will prevent bacterial contamination and extend the vase life of the flowers
